Today, we’re talking gelatin… and not the Jell-O kind, which I’m not really a big fan of anyways. I’m talking about gelatin like good for your body gelatin (aka collagen – we’ll get to that in a second). Didn’t know gelatin like this existed? Me either until I recently and now I have to say I’m hooked.
So you have to know (and then immediately forget) what gelatin is to understand why it’s so beneficial and should definitely be a part of your beauty routine. Gelatin is a powder that’s made from the skin, bones, and tissues of animals (told you… 1.. 2.. 3.. let’s move on). It’s a great source of protein and filled with amino acids that will help build strong hair, skin, and nails! (FYI – Gelatin makes up anywhere from 25% – 35% of the overall protein in your body!)
Another fun fact we need to quickly cover is the difference between gelatin and collagen. Both gelatin and collagen hydrolysate contain the same proteins. They both have the same amino acids, but different chemical properties. What does this mean for you? Well, if you’re like me and bought gelatin at first, you’d probably notice super lumpy chunks if you’re coffee wasn’t really really hot or a thin film left in your glass once you were drinking. Collagen hydrolysate with NOT gel and dissolve into both cool & warm/hot liquids! Major win! (Seriously I was seeing great results with gelatin but was about to kick it to the door because I have this thing with textures and just could NOT handle thick coffee) so for the purposes of this blog post and in everyday conversation, they’re pretty much interchangeable.
Collagen has quickly become one of my favorite supplements based on how much two little tablespoons a day can do for your body!
Some of my favorite reasons to incorporate gelatin/collagen into your daily life:
- Gelatin is a good source of dietary collagen and helps with skin’s firmness and overall tone.
(This is #1 in my book since I found gelatin/collagen when looking for a natural cure for my chronic under the eye bags. So far, so good! My skin has really improved and looks fuller than ever before!)
- Loss of collagen causes wrinkles. More gelatin, more collagen, less wrinkles.
- The protein in collagen keeps you fuller longer so have some bone broth when your 3pm snack craving hits and I guarantee you’ll make it to dinner!
- Can’t fall asleep? Some studies show collagen taken before bed can shorten the time it takes you to fall asleep.
Okay, I’m in but how?
My favorite ways to get collagen are through either 1- collagen powder or 2 – bone broth. I use this collagen powder and mix two tablespoons in my coffee every morning. *As warned above, there’s a version of this that has orange packaging and says “Gelatin”. That formula will only dissolve into hot liquids, anything else and no bueno.
